Working with a graduate student intern

Sammy is a graduate student intern completing a supervised clinical practicum with our practice. He is not a registered psychotherapist. He practises under the clinical supervision of Anita Thompson, Registered Social Worker, who reviews his work regularly and is available to you and to him throughout.

For many people this is a good way to start. Sessions with an intern cost less, the work is closely supported by an experienced clinician, and the pace and the goals are still entirely yours. If at any point you would rather see a registered therapist, we will help you move over.

A bit about my path

I came to this work through a long-standing interest in why people do what they do, and what actually helps them feel safe. That curiosity carried me through my undergraduate training in psychology and into graduate school, and it still shapes how I sit with clients: paying attention to the person in front of me before any framework or technique.

What I value most is the working relationship itself. Being trusted with someone’s difficult moments, and walking with them while they find their footing, is not something I take lightly.

Who I support

Adults, teens and children (14+)

  • Anxiety and chronic worry
  • Depression and low motivation
  • Stress, burnout and emotional overwhelm
  • Life transitions and questions of identity
  • Relationship and communication difficulties
  • Emotional regulation
  • Self-esteem and confidence

Younger clients

While my primary focus is older adolescents and adults, I also welcome younger clients and adapt my approach to meet them at their developmental stage.

My education

I completed my Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology and Human Behaviour at McMaster University, and I am currently finishing my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counselling at Niagara University. As a graduate intern, I practise under the supervision of a registered clinician, which means your care is supported by experienced oversight at every step.

What to expect in our first session

Our first meeting is low-pressure and conversational. It’s really just a way for us to connect, talk about what’s on your mind, and create a plan together that feels right for you. You’re welcome to come exactly as you are: there’s no pressure to have everything sorted out beforehand.

What to know before you book

  • Sessions with Sammy are $90 for 50 minutes, a reduced fee reflecting his training, with a sliding scale available.
  • Receipts are issued in Sammy’s name and note the supervision arrangement. Whether your extended health plan reimburses sessions with a student intern depends on the plan, so please check before you book.
  • Sessions are in person at our St. Catharines location.

Outside the therapy room

Away from my studies and clinical practice, I spend much of my time helping run my family’s restaurant. It keeps me grounded in my roots and reminds me how powerful it can be to gather around a table and share a meal. I try to bring that same sense of warmth, steadiness, and welcome into the therapy room so you can feel comfortable showing up exactly as you are.
